Pau Gasol turned 34 on Sunday. Exactly where he’ll be when he turns 35 remains a mystery.
Other than LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, no unrestricted free agent has received more interest from more teams than Gasol, who reportedly is being sought by the Thunder, Bulls, Heat, Spurs and Knicks. The Lakers would like him to return at a reduced salary.
Still no word who officially leads the Gasol sweepstakes. Gasol’s most recent Tweet on his free agency came Saturday and said: "The process continues, Intense days with a lot to think about & consider. Have a great weekend everyone!” Underneath the tweet was a picture of Rodin’s "The Thinker."
Gasol indeed has a lot to think about and likely will react to wherever James and Anthony end up signing.
The more things remain status quo, the better the Thunder’s chances appear to be in landing Gasol.
* If James and Anthony remain with the Heat and Knicks, the Thunder might be Gasol’s next stop.
* If Anthony re-signs with the Knicks, he reportedly wants to lure Gasol to New York. This would seem unlikely because Gasol is said to be interested only in contenders, and the Knicks most certainly are not – with or without Anthony. Plus, the Knicks would be extremely limited financially if Anthony re-signs for a maximum contract.
* If Anthony signs with the Lakers, Gasol likely will remain in LA.
* If Chris Bosh accepts Houston’s max offer, Gasol could replace him with the Heat if James returns to Miami.
Once the two biggest dominoes fall (James and Anthony) others will quickly follow, including Gasol.
Until then, Gasol will continue to think it through.
The Thunder also is thought to be a contender for 3-point specialists Mike Miller and Anthony Morrow, plus veteran shooting guard Vince Carter.
